Cold Storage Management

Installation Guide

This guide will walk you through installing the IoT Pro Temperature monitoring system in cold room environments. The process typically takes 1-2 hours for a standard installation.

This installation must be performed by a qualified electrician or authorized technician only due to high voltage hazards

Before you begin

Before your first installation, complete the IoT Pro Quick Start in the office to familiarize yourself with the process

Parts Needed

  • 1 x IoT Pro Temperature

  • 1 x temperature sensor (1m, 5m or 15m)

  • 1 x 12VDC 1A Power supply

  • As Necessary x 2 Core 0.75mm² cable for supply

  • 1 x 7mm long HSS drill bit

  • 1 x 12mm HSS drill bit

  • 1 x Fish cable or Metal Rod

  • 1 x M12 Grommet

Optional but Recommended

  • As Necessary x conduit or trunking

  • 1 x Bond and Seal (Wurth recommended)

  • M6x40 A4 Stainless Steel wall plugs

Installing Sensors

Start with installing the temperature sensor, before installing the IoT Pro. This allows you to position the IoT Pro device optimally, avoiding the need for junction boxes or cable extensions.

Inside the cold room

There are multiple ways to pass the sensor into the cold room:

  • Option A: Inspect the cold room perimeter as a hole may be already available

  • Option B: Create a new access point using a 7mm HSS drill bit

  • Option C: Locate the compressor cooling pipe—typically a large copper pipe with black insulation— and make a small hole with the metal rod/ fish cable in the insulation foam/ sealer used to close the cooling pipe hole, then pass small metal rod or fish cable from the outside to inside of the cold room.

  • Option D: If you would not like to drill a hole, the sensor can be passed from the top of the door, cold room seals are large enough to not damage the wire and flexible enough to seal well if in good condition (this would only be an alternative solution when other methods are not feasible)

Note: Place the sensor in the middle of the room, close to a wall and not directly facing the blower unit to read the actual temperature of the room, however if you would like to read the temperature being produced by the blower connect the sensor directly to the grille of the blower unit

Note: After the sensor is placed safely in your desired location seal the hole with expanding foam or sealer (Wurth bond and seal is recommended as it can withstand the cold of the room and connect to the cold surface inside)

Installation Tips: usually there will be conduit for lighting or light fixtures you can hide the cable behind, if not it is recommended to attach a trunking system or conduit to pass the sensor from the hole to the Blower as this can be damaged once merchandise starts to be moved in the cold room. The sensor cable will solidify in cold temperatures and can cracked if hit hard enough.

Installation Tips: if any kind of adhesive is used inside the cold room, the cold room will need to be warmed up first as most adhesives can not connect to a cold/frozen surface.

Installing The IoT Pro

Outside the cold room

  1. Locate the cold room control panel (this will usually be found close to the door)

  2. Choose a suitable place for the IoT Pro to be attached, but do not mount the device at this stage (M6 wall plugs into the wall or with sealer onto the side of the control panel)

  3. Pass the connection end of the sensor to the IoT Pro

  4. Using a multimeter check the main circuit breaker has correct supply (EU 240v) then turn it off and confirm visually that the voltage goes down to 0 and the cold room turns off.

  5. When turning the panel off keep the door closed to preserve the temperature

  6. Drill a 12mm hole on the side or bottom of the control panel and add an M12 grommet

  7. Insert the sensor cable and supply cable into the IoT Pro

  8. Pass the supply cable into the control panel via the grommet attached in step 6

Installation Tips: usually there will be trunking going from the compressor to the control panel where you can pass the sensor cable, if not it is recommended to attach small trunking or pass the cable through a conduit

Electrical Connections

Turn off the main supply to Cold Room before proceeding

Note: A complete wiring diagram is available at the end of this guide for reference

Use a 0.75mm² 2-core cable for AC and DC supply but keep the AC supply cable as short as possible

Pass the sensor cable into the IoT Pro device and connect as follows:

  • DIN1: Yellow wire

  • 3V6: Red wire

  • GND: Black wire

Power Supply

  1. Use a 2-core 0.75mm² cable

  2. Connect one end of the cable to the power board’s 2-pole terminal block

  3. Connect the other end to the Qoltec power supply

  4. Connect the Qoltec power supply after the circuit breaker you turned off to drill the hole

Tech Tips: Some Cold Rooms have a small DC 12V battery backup, this would mean that a battery charger is present and you can connect directly to the charger without the use of the 12VDC power supply. (Check on the wiring diagram of the controller where this charger is, or follow the wires going to the battery and confirm a 12v supply with a multimeter)

Testing and Commissioning

Initial Verification

  1. Connect to the IoT Pro device using the mobile application

  2. Confirm that Peripherals is OK

  3. Verify the Application Data

Software Platform Configuration

  1. Log In to your IoT Pro Software Platform

  2. Navigate to Assets

  3. Create a new asset whilst taking particular note of the following settings:

    1. Choose the Device ID based on the label on the device

Conclusion

  1. Double-check all connections

  2. Switch the cold room controller circuit breaker back on

  3. Activate the IoT Pro Device and Send a Message as explained in IoT Pro Quick Start

  4. Test the cold room operation
