This guide explains how to install the IoT Pro Radar & Tilt Module in a Sewage or Water Manhole. Two installation options are presented below.


For both installation options, the following points should be taken into consideration:

  1. Keep the Sensor's View Clear: Make sure there are no ladders, pipes, cables, wall protrusions, or other objects in the radar's path to the liquid surface.

  2. Keep the Sensor Level: Mount the module as level as possible, with the radar beam pointing perpendicular to the liquid surface.

  3. Keep Enough Wall Clearance: Position the device with enough clearance from the manhole wall and ensure that the sensor has a clear view of the liquid.


Option 1: Manhole Wall Installation – Distance Measurement Only

Mount the device to the inside wall of the manhole using a stainless steel L-bracket with sufficient length to position the device at the required distance from the wall.

Wall Clearance: For wall-mounted installations, keep the centre of the device approximately the following distance from the wall:

  • 1–2m measurement distance: 15cm

  • 2–3m measurement distance: 25cm

  • 3m or more: 30cm

Check the level: Use a spirit level to make sure the device is level before securing it in place


Option 2: Manhole Cover Installation – Distance Measurement + Open/Close Detection

Mount the device to the underside of the manhole cover. This installation allows the module to detect when the cover is opened.

Step 1: Bolt the Device

Follow the Bolting Guide for the required tools and general bolting procedure.

For this installation, install the bolts in the opposite direction shown in the general guide:

  • Use suitable M6 bolts long enough to pass through the manhole cover

  • Insert the bolts from the top side of the cover

  • Fit the nuts on the IoT Pro sticker side (underneath the manhole cover)

Step 2: Fit the Protectors

Fit the supplied M8 protectors around the device. These help protect the device from damage if the manhole cover is dropped or placed heavily on the ground.

The M8 bolt heads should be on the top side of the manhole cover, with the protectors fitted underneath around the device.

Mount the device as close to the centre of the cover as possible, while keeping the sensor's view towards the liquid clear. The device can be mounted off-centre if an obstacle prevents centre mounting.

If the device is mounted off-centre, make sure the manhole cover has a keying insert so it can only be installed in one orientation. If there is no keying insert, add a clear alignment mark to ensure the cover is always returned to the same position.
